February is School of Choice month!

Almost all of our Simi Valley Schools are considered Schools of Choice. (The standing exceptions to School of Choice are Hollow Hills Elementary and Vista Elementary, which are fundamental schools, and Santa Susana High School which is a magnet school.) In some years, schools that are filled to capacity may be closed to School of Choice, but for the 2018-2019 school year, all of our schools except those listed as standing exceptions are able to accept School of Choice applicants. As long as the school is not filled to its capacity with existing students and incoming neighborhood students, students living outside the neighborhood boundaries of a school may apply to enroll in that school, and the school may accept these students until the school is filled to capacity. If there are more applications than there are available spots for interested students, the school will conduct a random lottery to select the number of students they are able to accept.

  • Sinaloa Middle School will be a holding a "Parent Information Night" on Tuesday, January 30th at 6:00 p.m.
  • Sinaloa campus tours will be every Thursday in January and February at 9:00 a.m.
  • Open House & Saber Spotlight will be Thursday, February 22 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Deadline to apply is Wednesday, February 28, 2018.

Please come to one of these events and see all of the wonderful things happening at Sinaloa Middle School, a California Gold Ribbon School and California School to Watch!

Good evening Simi Valley Schools Families:

We’ve been closely monitoring the air quality in our district and know there are concerns about the smoke currently seen in the city. The air quality forecast for tomorrow shows a northwest wind advisory in Ventura County, and the Ventura County Air Pollution District shows Simi Valley is in the “good” range tomorrow for ozone and particulates because of the expected winds.

All schools will be open tomorrow, December 15.

If smoke does remain in the area, all schools will follow our inclement weather procedures and keep the students indoors as much as possible. We will continue to monitor the weather quality and keep you informed of any changes that might be made to the school schedule.

Please be assured that the safety and well-being of our students and staff is our top priority.

Thank you.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM SVUSD:
Dear Simi Valley Schools Families:

As of now, we are still planning on all schools being open tomorrow, Thursday, December 7.

We are working closely with the city of Simi Valley, the Police Department and many other agencies as we all monitor the progress of fire events in our region. As of right now, we have been told that the Rye Fire (Santa Clarita) is not likely to cause us problems. The fire services did an excellent job of suppressing the fire line and directing it in a way that they believe is now manageable. But, we have been told that the winds are expected to return late this afternoon and continue on through tomorrow, and that they are supposed to be even stronger than what we've seen so far. This could create new problems with air quality or fires, so we will continue to monitor and assess the risks to students and staff.

As we did yesterday, we will continue to advise you on all possible channels about any changes to our plans to open schools tomorrow. Please keep checking your email, social media, and district app notifications for information.

Thank you.
Dr. Jason Peplinski
Superintendent

IMPORTANT MESSAGE:

Dear Simi Schools Families:

After careful consideration of the poor air quality and the potential fire dangers from neighboring events, ALL of our campuses and offices will be closed tomorrow. We know that this is a large decision and may cause inconvenience for some families. Thank you for your patience and support while we gathered the information needed to make this decision.

Please know that there will be NO personnel at any school site or at the District Office. Also, all before- and after-school programs and extracurricular events are also canceled.

We fully expect to resume school as normal on Thursday morning.

We will continue to keep everyone informed.

Thank you again and please stay safe.

THURSDAY, Sept 7th is the Sinaloa MS Back To School Night (BTSN)   This is a night where parents (students should not be here) travel to each of their students classes by following our bell schedule for the night.  You will hear from each of your students teachers about their class and a few other pieces of information.  This is NOT a night for an individual meet and greet or mini parent conference.  IF you want to do that the counseling office will be very happy to set that up with you for another time that works for you and the teachers.

The evening will begin in the gym at about 5:40 with our PTSA Association meeting following by Officer Arabian who will discuss our traffic issues and some solutions.  Following that the Principal will have a few closing comments and then you will be dismissed to go to classrooms.

IF your student attends a zero period class, they will meet from 750-8pm.  At 8:00 pm in the school library, there will be an informational wrestling meeting with Coach Carrillo for those families interested in our wrestling program. Also, there will be table for our PTSA Opportunity Drawing for Disneyland tickets, our Rustic Interiors Fundraiser, our 6th grade Outdoor Camp Opportunity Basket, and our Counselors to help answer questions  you may have!

We are looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow night!

“Within Reach”

That’s the theme for the 2017-2018 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

Entries must be turned in to the Sinaloa main office by Thursday, September 28, 2017.

Reflections entry forms and guidelines are available online at:
http://downloads.capta.org/ref/16-17StudentEntryForm.pdf
http://capta.org/programs-events/reflections/general-rules/

Please contact Jeannette Deen at needaj@yahoo.com if you have any questions. The attached flyer also has information for you!

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

PARTICIPATION IS EASY, EXCITING AND EMPOWERING

All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

  • Dance/choreography
  • Literature
  • Photography
  • Film production
  • Music composition
  • Visual arts.

Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. School PTAs then choose a selection of entries to be judged by local PTA units, which are then sent on to councils and then districts for consideration. The final artworks submitted to California State PTA by districts are then considered for Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit. Award of Excellence entries then go on to represent California in the final National PTA judging round. Please review general entry rules.

State-level Award of Excellence honorees receive:

  • The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention
  • Prizes including an Award of Excellence medal, certificate and a $100 savings bond presented on stage at convention
  • An expense-paid trip for the award-winning student and one parent/guardian to convention.

Happy Friday Sinaloa MS Families

Thank you for a good three days of school.  Students are busy learning about the school as well as campus and classroom expectations.  We are excited to see what the coming year brings!

Today, during homeroom, ALL STUDENTS were shown the following video:

https://ed.ted.com/lessons/what-creates-a-total-solar-eclipse-andy-cohen

This very short informative video shows students the history and "whys" regarding a Solar Eclipse.  The last bit of information on the video addresses the dangers associated with an eclipse.  As a school, we have to concentrate on speaking with our students that not only is this an exciting historical event, choosing not to follow teacher and staff direction can lead to damaged eyes.  We will not be providing or creating any special glasses or tools to view it with.

On Monday, August 21st, we will NOT HAVE NUTRITION and simply have the normal five minute passing period.  During the passing periods, teachers and staff will be out of their classrooms to "extra" monitor students they may see looking directly into the sun should they make the choice to do so.  PE classes will be inside.  Students who need to use the restroom during class, will be escorted by a campus supervisor.

We are asking teachers who are able, to live stream the event!  While not every one will be able to do so, students will have 3 classes during the time of the eclipse and hopefully be able to view it once or twice.

Finally, we are asking families to spend some time talking to your children about this wonderful event and to counsel them about the dangers of looking straight into the sun.  While we have spent time talking about it as well as the dangers, students could choose to ignore us.  The more adults they hear it from the better!  The SVUSD is also sending all Simi Valley families an informative email as well.

Should you have any questions, as always, please give us a call!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Janke

Lockers will be assigned by the homeroom teachers on Tuesday, August 22, 2017.

August 28, 2017
Good Afternoon Sinaloa MS Families!

As you are aware of, all SVUSD families need to have created an Aeries Parent Portal account.  Not only does this portal serve to inform you about a student's academic progress, it has other features as well.  Changing student contacts, phone numbers, email addresses, etc. are also available to you.

Currently, besides needing to have created a portal, all families for each student enrolled MUST complete the Student Data Confirmation piece.  It must be FULLY completed.  It is a series of questions that must be clicked on and checked to be considered completed.

In order for any Sinaloa student to receive a locker, both the Student Data Confirmation AND the Parent/Student Signature Sheet found in the agenda book (or the neon orange paper which was sent home the first day of school or online).  Students whose parents HAVE NOT completed these two things will not receive a locker on Tuesday, August 22 during their homeroom class.  Should you not complete this by Monday evening, your student will have to wait to get their locker at another arranged time with their teacher.  Tuesday morning, we are not able to handle lots of students and parents needing to use a computer here to do so.  Please come see us today or Monday to ensure we have time to help you out if you are encountering difficulties with the process.

The district has been sending emails all summer regarding your Aeries Portal Account and Sinaloa MS discussed this at our Orientations as well as with our students both during morning announcements and during classes.

Lockers are optional for all students.  Should you choose for your student not to have a locker, we still require both the signature sheet and the Student Data confirmation to be completed.  We need acknowledgement of rules and polices in addition to allowing your student to have access to any phone/computer usage while at school.

Questions?  Give us a call!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Janke

Note: Students who choose to use a Sinaloa locker must secure it with a Sinaloa lock. Locks purchased from other schools or stores are not allowed. If you aren’t sure if it's a Sinaloa lock, please bring your lock to the ASB office. Locks are $8.00 and can be paid by cash, check, credit or debit card. They may also be purchased at the MySchoolBucks online Student Store.

Students who attended Sinaloa Middle School in Spring 2017 and received all "O's and/or S's" on their final report card will get first choice on their lockers.

Welcome letter sent to all Sinaloa students 8-16-17 6:30 pm:

Good Evening Sinaloa Sabers!

Welcome to Sinaloa MS!  We have been waiting for you and the time is here!  School begins tomorrow at 8:15 am when all students will report to their assigned homeroom classes.  Students can look at their homeroom assignment which is posted at the front of the school.  Students will receive their full schedules in homeroom.

FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO WILL HAVE A ZERO PERIOD... classes will not begin until TUESDAY, AUGUST 29th.  This is due to our beginning of school special schedules and taking things slow for students to learn their new transitions.  In addition, for the first five days of school students will have a staggered lunch with different times each day due to our special schedules.

Tomorrow students only need to bring to school their agenda book (ours or store bought), paper, pen, pencil and a backpack or book bag to keep things in.  DO NOT BRING TO SCHOOL PE CLOTHES OR LOCKS UNTIL THESE ITEMS ARE NEEDED.  Lockers will not be assigned to students until next week when they receive their textbooks.

Tomorrow morning in the front of the school by the counseling office, our PTSA volunteers will be selling agenda books and locks.  If you purchase them tonight online, and bring your printed purchase receipt there will be a speed line for you.

Tomorrow and Friday the school day ends at 3:05.  REMEMBER, that Thursdays are a 2:05 dismissal time.  THANK YOU ahead of time for practicing patience in our parking lot.  New families need to learn the routine and this takes time.  Please practice safety when driving in the lot.

We look forward to meeting your students tomorrow morning with our very special Sinaloa greeting taking place out in the front of the school!

I wish everyone a wonderful day and look forward to seeing new faces and returning faces!

Mrs. Janke
